Under the general supervision of Infection Prevention & Control (IPC) leadership, the IP2 position is the second step in the four-level career ladder from Novice to Expert. IP2 is for individuals with some infection prevention or related healthcare experience, but without the knowledge or skills in all infection prevention content areas to function independently. The IP2 participates in the Infection Prevention and Control program by participating in routine surveillance, data collection, education and research with the support of IP3-4s and Medical Directors. Key job functions include routine infection surveillance for infections, further development of skills in environmental infection prevention, and serving as the point person for one or more units/service lines with support from more IP3-4s and Medical Director(s). Those in the IP2 position will receive ongoing training and professional development in the field through self-study, observation, mentorship and sponsored training activities.Job Description:
Job Responsibilities:
1) Complete training in healthcare-associated infection surveillance (CLABSI, CAUTI, SSI). Demonstrate competency in performing these types of surveillance independently with accuracy and consistency. (essential)
2) Perform direct observation of basic infection prevention practices, including staff hand hygiene. Document appropriately and communicate with unit leadership, as necessary. (essential)
3) With support of IP3-4s and/or Medical Director(s) and IPC leadership, work up patient and staff exposures to select infectious diseases, complete exposure documentation, and communicate with local Employee Health and unit leadership. (essential)
4) With support of IP3-4s and/or Medical Director(s) and IPC leadership, help manage diseases of public health concern (e.g. Tuberculosis, Mpox) case evaluations, management, and reporting to the department of public health (DPH). (essential)
5) Develop competence in Joint Commission (TJC), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and other regulatory requirements. Assist in TJC preparedness efforts as assigned. (essential)
6) Function as primary infection prevention contact for select inpatient units/ambulatory clinics/service lines, including staff education with support of IP3-4s. (essential)
7) Independently perform Infection Control Risk Assessments for construction and maintenance projects and monitor compliance as needed. (essential)
8) Develop skills in outbreak detection and management. Assist more IP3-4s and/or Medical Directors and IPC leadership in outbreak investigations and reporting (essential).
9) Develop and demonstrate competency in basic data analysis and statistical methodologies (essential).
10) Demonstrates good judgement by asking for assistance from IP3-4s, IPC leadership, and Medical Directors as appropriate and maintains strict adherence to BILH confidentiality guidelines and always maintains compliance with HIPAA. Additional duties as assigned. (essential)
Required Qualifications:
1. Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree in Infection Control, Nursing, Public Health, Epidemiology, or Statistics preferred.
2. Licensed Registered Nurse preferred
3. 1-3 years of work experience in infection prevention and control preferred
4. 1-5 years of work experience required
5. Professional licensure in related field (RN, MT, etc.) must be maintained as active, if applicable
6. Advanced skills with the Microsoft Office suite applications required
7. Experience in use of electronic health records, particularly Epic and/or infection prevention software preferred
8. Detail oriented, critical thinker, effective communicator with analytical abilities and strong interpersonal skills.
